So, Bono & the Edge are completely blameless; give a (critically acclaimed and award-winning) female director complete artistic freedom and she’ll totally FUCK THINGS UP beyond repair. Because when something goes wrong in a musical, it’s clearly about the direction alone. Who cares about the story, or oh, you know, the score? Sheesh.

Well hello. “The Library of Congress presents the National Jukebox, which makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives. Recordings in the Jukebox were issued on record labels now owned by Sony Music Entertainment, which has granted the Library of Congress a gratis license to stream acoustical recordings. At launch, the Jukebox includes more than 10,000 recordings made by the Victor Talking Machine Company between 1901 and 1925. Jukebox content will be increased regularly, with additional Victor recordings and acoustically recorded titles made by other Sony-owned U.S. labels, including Columbia, OKeh, and others.”

Iconic Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook — he of the impossibly low-slung four-string — turns 55 today, and to mark the occasion, we present Joy Division’s long-out-of-print VHS concert film “Here Are the Young Men,” released in 1982 and filmed primarily at the Apollo Theatre in Manchester on Oct. 27, 1979. The quality is a bit dark and grainy, and the uploader didn’t include the opening credit sequence set to “Decades” — but there’s some bonus material at the end.

It occurs, after ranting and ranting about this and finally having it drive me out of the “scene” completely: I wish dearly we could do something about this, but the politics are pretty heartbreakingly entrenched now. Someone with more cajones and possibly more longevity than I would need to take the lead. We should take a stand, instead of rolling over and taking it, or ignoring the issue. You know?
